What does it take for our NHS to meet the basic maternity standards now enshrined in government policy? For the best chance of normal birth, a woman needs a midwife with her throughout her labour. None of us would accept an operation going ahead without an anaesthetist, or one running between three or so patients, so why should women in labour be expected to share a midwife?
