British man dies in Indonesian hospital after doctors ‘demanded bribe before treating him’ - Daily Mail 21st November 2008

A British holidaymaker died in an Indonesian hospital after doctors refused to treat him until they received hundreds of dollars in bribes, an MP has claimed.

Dale Nord, 43, was ‘allowed to die while British embassy officers and doctors stood and let him’ for the sake of a bribe, Barnsley Central MP Eric Illsley said.

The MP revealed by the time the doctors received part of the cash and agreed to treat him it was too late.

Revealed: Star Wars-style ‘light sabre’ to destroy cancer cells - Daily Mail 21st November 2008

A revolutionary laser which could fight cancer has been developed by British scientists.

The device, which has been compared to a Star Wars light sabre, could be routinely used on patients in NHS hospitals within the next five years, according to the researchers.

Light-wave implant hope for deaf - BBC Health News 22nd November 2008

An implant which works by firing infrared light into the inner ear is being investigated by US researchers.

Nerves in the ear can be stimulated by light as well as sound and the team from Northwestern University, Illinois, is aiming to harness this.
