Reduce antibiotics for minor ailments, GPs told - The Telegraph 4th January 2008

Family doctors are wrongly prescribing antibiotics to treat minor ailments such as coughs, colds and sore throats, in a third of all cases, the Chief Medical Officer has disclosed. Speaking to The Daily Telegraph as the Government launches a £270 million campaign on the unnecessary use of drugs such as penicillin, Sir Liam Donaldson said the proper use of antibiotics was vital in the battle against superbugs such as MRSA. Last year, 38 million prescriptions for antibiotics were written by GPs at a cost to the NHS of £175 million.
