Nurses 'can't afford houses in 99 per cent of UK towns' - The Independent 13th April 2007
More than two thirds of towns are unaffordable for key public sector workers, a report published today says. Research by Halifax indicated that a typical property in 70 per cent of towns was now beyond the reach of nurses, teachers, police officers, firefighters and paramedics. The figure is up from 65 per cent last year and almost double the 36 per cent deemed to be unaffordable in March 2002.

Tuberculosis on the rise - Lancaster Today 13th April 2007
DOCTORS are warning people to be on their guard against tuberculosis as cases have been rising in Lancaster. The reported number of cases of TB across the North West has increased slightly in recent years, prompting an awareness campaign. The figures for Lancaster show a small rise from 2.9 cases per 100,000 people in 2004 to 4.3 cases per 100,000 people in 2005. Most of the new cases come from people who have links with countries where TB infection is more widespread than the UK.
Health chiefs protest at ambulances' 999 failures - Lancaster Today 13th April 2007
HEALTH chiefs have formally complained about delays in ambulances answering 999 calls. In January and February targets for 75 per cent of category A calls to be handled within eight minutes were not met. The North Lancashire Primary Care Trust protested to the North West Ambulance Service. "This target is not being met in the North Lancashire area as well as over the Lancashire area as a whole," said Margaret Bode, head of commission at the PCT.
