Scientists have made an experimental - and apparently effective - flu vaccine inside insect cells. They hope the technique could provide a way to produce vaccine quickly and in volume in the event of a flu pandemic.


Diabetes patients 'lacking help' - BBC News 11th April 2007
People with diabetes in England need more support to help them manage their condition themselves, a survey finds. The Healthcare Commission also found more could be done to improve hospital care for people with diabetes.


More choice for knee and hip ops - BBC News 11th April 2007
People needing non-emergency orthopaedic treatment such as knee and hip replacements are to have a choice of going to any hospital in England. Ministers are making the announcement - a year ahead of schedule - as part of their plan to give patients more control over their NHS care.

A hospital in Cornwall has denied it tried to cover up the fact a patient had died from clostridium difficile. The allegation was made by the widow of a man who contracted the bacterium at the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro.

An emergency heart attack centre has cut death rates by more than half in its first year, it has been revealed. The Barts and The London Heart Attack Centre in east London has treated 755 people since opening in April 2006 - more than any other in the UK.

Almost 80% of people in the UK know at least two friends who have experienced mental distress, research suggests. The Mental Health Foundation research also revealed many people did not want to admit their problems to friends for fear of what they would think.

Trust to shut award-winning maternity unit despite pledge - The Guardian 11th April 2007
An NHS foundation trust is planning to close an award-winning midwife-led maternity unit despite the government last week promising every woman the option of such a delivery. Heavily pregnant women in north Derbyshire will have to travel up to 21 miles on country roads because of plans to close the Darley Dale unit and cut community midwife numbers from 50 to 33.

Hopes have been raised of a new treatment to free thousands of diabetes sufferers from the burden of daily insulin injections. Scientists revealed findings of a study which shows that 15 young patients with type one diabetes overcame their dependence on insulin after being treated with their own stem cells.

Diabetes 'blocked by stem cells' - BBC News 11th April 2007
Brazilian and US scientists have used transfusions of patients' own stem cells to reverse type 1 diabetes. People with the condition are known as insulin-dependent, and require regular shots of the hormone.

THREE teenage girls have been treated in hospital after taking pills suspected to be ecstasy. Parents are being warned to explain the dangers of drugs to their children after the incident.

THE life expectancy of many Afro-Caribbean males in Manchester is just 25, a university professor has claimed. Prof Gus John, a leading activist in Moss Side for many years, makes the shocking claim in a new report in which he says black fathers must take greater responsibility for their children's education to stop teenage boys turning to gun crime.
