When Christian Constantine was born, his facial deformities were so severe that the paediatricians who went to see him in intensive care had no idea whether he would survive, if he had brain damage, or how they might begin to put things right. A genetic quirk had produced a combination of conditions so rare and complex there have only been three other cases recorded in the world. Christian had a cleft that ran from his upper lip to his forehead, as if the two halves of his face hadn't fused properly. He had hypertelorism, which meant his eyes were abnormally far apart and his brows and hairline were far too high.
