We want more than pyjamas to protect health - The Sunday Telegraph 2nd November 2007

You've got to hand it to the eagle-eyed product planners at Marks & Spencer: they can spot a retail opportunity even in a disaster zone. It emerged last week that nestled among the cotton-fresh boxer shorts and the tummy-control tights is a fresh and exciting garment: a £45 pair of men's "Sleepsafe" pyjamas (in teal, navy and burgundy) that claim to protect against the hospital-acquired infection MRSA. I'm not sure quite how efficient this clothing will prove at quelling superbugs, but there's definitely an unhealthily large market for it. Last year, the National Audit Office estimated that deaths from hospital-acquired infections, including MRSA, are running as high as 5,000 a year. The most recent cleanliness survey of England's 397 hospital trusts, by the Healthcare Commission, found a quarter failing to comply with hygiene regulations. A more demanding citizenry might protest in the streets, or storm the hospitals with giant bottles of antiseptic spray. Being British, we quietly pop down to M&S and mull over their antibacterial nightwear.
