The hare's intense sexual activity and fecundity - producing up to 42 offspring a year - have made it an enduring fertility symbol. The emblems of Venus, Aphrodite and Cupid all incorporate hares, and Pliny the Elder commended its meat as a cure for female sterility. Hence, no doubt, the recommendation in the recently discovered 17th-century health manual The Lady's Companion that those seeking to conceive should take a nightly concoction of hare's spittle mixed with wine. The ancients were pretty wise about such things - but sourcing the spittle might be difficult. Though it's rather more mundane, the cough medicine Robitussin is also reported to increase the chances of conceiving.
