The Independent (Nov 1) devoted its front page to asking how “members of a caring profession” can justify their 10 per cent pay rise, or as the newspaper puts it: “awarding themselves a larger slice of the NHS cake – at the expense of their patients”. GPs’ pay rose to £110,000 in 2005-06.
