FIGURES for HIV cases in the North West last year have revealed the lowest number of new infections in four years. But the 492 cases – 76 of them on Merseyside – are still a “worryingly high figure”, according to health experts. Statistics released by the Health Protection Agency show that 5,930 people have been diagnosed with HIV, the infection that can lead to AIDS, in the North West since 1991.
