Thousands of packets of biscuits contaminated with the industrial chemical melamine were ordered off shop shelves in the UK yesterday, following an alert from the Food Standards Agency. Inspectors were dispatched to Chinese supermarkets and independent retailers across the country to remove and destroy the biscuits after officials in the Netherlands said 3,500 packets of contaminated biscuits had been shipped to Britain.
