Patients could be asked to call a new "non emergency" national telephone number if their case is not life threatening, under proposals for a pilot study. Advocates of the idea believe that offering an alternative to 999 could help patients and save the NHS money. The Ambulance Service Network (ASN), which is proposing the new telephone number, said it could work alongside the existing 999 service.
