Failing NHS hospitals may be put under private sector management in a last-ditch attempt to improve services to patients, the government will disclose today. Ben Bradshaw, the health minister, will unveil a regime for NHS trusts that persistently provide substandard care or cannot balance the books. It will give David Nicholson, the NHS chief executive, powers to sack the entire board of hospitals unable to meet tight deadlines for improvement and replace them with a new management team.
