Women with high-risk breast cancer genes should have their breasts removed to reduce their chance of developing the disease to virtually nothing, scientists advise. A study has suggested that the pre-emptive operation may cut their chances of developing the cancer to less than one per cent. About 100,000 women in Britain are believed to carry dangerous versions of the BRCA genes, which give them an 85 per cent chance of developing the disease.
