Taxpayers will pick up a £60billion bill for private companies to provide new hospitals. Opposition MPs said the figure, which emerged yesterday, was evidence of the parlous state of public finances. The money is owed under the Private Finance Initiative in which firms build, run and maintain public facilities in return for annual payments.
