A snake-shaped robot that can crawl into parts of the heart that doctors cannot reach could revolutionise cardiac surgery. The foot-long device is no thicker than a straw and has dozens of joints that allow it to turn tight corners. The probe - called CardioArm - is controlled by a surgeon using a joystick on a hand-held console.
