A decision on whether to add folic acid to bread has been delayed by the Government because of fresh concerns about a link with bowel cancer. The verdict on folic acid, which helps prevent birth defects such as spina bifida, was expected this year from the Food Standards Agency, the Government's food watchdog. Now it will not be made until the middle of next year at the earliest.
