Blood-pressure drugs that are prescribed to millions of Britons may also help control an irregular heartbeat. A study suggests that statins, prescriptions of which have more than doubled in three years, could help reduce risk of irregular heartbeat – medically known as atrial fibrillation – a condition that affects one in 20 people over the age of 70. The Government says that increased use of the drugs has been a factor in heart disease deaths in recent years.
