MINETTE MARRIN is so right about the NHS keeping people alive against their will at inordinate cost and wasting resources (Comment, last week). Our beautiful, kind and elegant mum suffered from myasthenia gravis, an incurable muscle wasting disease. In May 2006, at the age of 85, she wrote a note saying that she had outlived her useful life and took an overdose. Sadly the barbiturates she had been saving were 40 years old and she survived but was seriously impaired. She steadily declined and, after nine months of suffering and increasing indignity, her lungs gave out.
