LAUGHTER is the best medicine, they say. So medics should work on people’s funnybones as well as their bodies, says Simon Daniels, a mental health rehabilitation nurse at Richmond Fellowship, Stoke-on-Trent. He tells Nursing Times (Nov 20) that hospitals should employ funny people, such as laughter therapists and experts from the NHS-funded Happiness project. Patients could choose from a mirth menu of amusing activities to capture laughter’s healing properties. This could also reinvigorate a weary workforce. According to Daniels, happy staff “usually become more enthusiastic and less prone to hide in the sluice or take an extended coffee break”
