A PLEA from the Sainsbury Centre for Mental Health for a GP practice in every prison is reported in communitycare.co.uk . More than half the 81,000 prisoners in England and Wales experience mental health problems and the centre says that GPs lack the time and skills to help. Setting up practices in prisons and giving them control of their budgets would enable services to be tailored. “The needs of prisoners and the nature of the prison environment mean health care needs to be tailored to each institution,” the report says, and suggests that a body be established to set prison care standards.
