The debate about immigration numbers is in danger of missing the key points The spectacle of ministers having to apologise for underestimating the overall number of migrant workers who have arived since 1997, and then being forced to deny that the real total is not higher, has been unsightly. It has left the impression of incoherence if not outright incompetence. The public may have concluded that the Opposition is entitled to assert that Britain has “lost control” of its borders. Thus, Jacqui Smith, the Home Secretary, has been wise to apologise unambiguously and to promise that more effort will be applied to ensuring that official statistics are collated and reported rigorously.
