The nurse passed the scanner over my screaming baby’s head and asked me: ‘How long has he been like this?’ ‘Since birth,’ I told her, wondering why on earth she was scanning his head when his problems appeared to be in his tummy. She gently explained that she was looking for cysts or tumours in the brain - a possible explanation for why my baby was screaming in agony for almost 24 hours a day.
