There has been a sharp drop in the incidence of the potentially deadly bug Clostridium difficile in NHS hospitals in England, the health secretary, Alan Johnson, said today. There were 8,683 cases recorded in patients aged over 65 between April and June - a decrease of 18% compared with the previous quarter between January and March, according to the agency that monitors infectious diseases.
