Scientists have discovered a gene mutation linked to the most common cause of blindness in the developed world, holding out the prospect of better treatments and even an eventual cure. The researchers looked at 479 patients in the UK with age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and a control group of the same size. They screened 32 genes potentially involved in the condition.
