When the NHS refused to grant funding for life-prolonging drugs, kidney cancer patient Jean Murphy was prepared for a fight. She took her case to the High Court – shaming Salford Primary Care Trust which had effectively condemned her to die within a year. The PCT refused to change its mind. But after the Daily Mail highlighted her case, Mrs Murphy, 62, was given £10,000 by an anonymous donor to pay for the drug privately.
