A weekly treatment for type 2 diabetes has proved safe and effective for patients in a trial involving 259 volunteers. The formulation is a version of a previously available treatment called exenatide, which mimics one of the body's hormones. The existing version must be self-injected by patients twice daily. The trial showed that the slow-acting form was more effective than the original at keeping glucose levels in the blood under control, and more convenient to use.
