James Le Fanu on the latest health stories hitting the headlines Medical scare stories are two a penny, but last week's "cancer fear over cholesterol treatment" merited its front-page coverage. The report of a 50 per cent increase in cancer cases in a study of patients treated with a statin-like drug is not to be sneezed at. Professor Sir Richard Peto of Oxford University, who has probably done more than any single person to promote statins, dismissed the findings as a "statistical fluke".
