Lack of exercise is commonly blamed for the obesity crisis, but according to researchers the real cause is over-eating. They say that, contrary to popular belief, we are no less active than 20 years ago. In Britain, a quarter of women and a fifth of men are classed as obese, at a cost to the NHS of £1billion a year. This number has tripled over the last 20 years according to National Audit figures. A further 32 per cent of women and 46 per cent of men are overweight, meaning less than half (42 per cent) of the population are a healthy weight.
