When farmer Richard Eckley was diagnosed with advanced kidney cancer, he had to make a choice. He could receive a drug from the Health Service for free that would give him a one in six chance of beating the disease. Or he could pay for a different one that might double his chances of survival - but he would also have to pay for all his care. As far as Mr Eckley, 68, was concerned, there was no choice at all, and he dug out his chequebook.
