It is difficult to understand the logic behind the refusal of Southend NHS Trust to continue to treat Linda O'Boyle after she bought additional medicine which she hoped would fight her cancer (report, June 2). If she had purchased a herbal remedy, a special food supplement or a quack remedy, in the belief it would benefit her, she would not be penalised as the treatment would be considered of "no proven value".
