Struggling elderly 'sick with worry' - The Telegraph 20th May 2008

Tuesday, May 20, 2008

A quarter of all pensioners are making themselves ill with worry about their future as the cost of living soars, a report by Help the Aged said. Higher fuel and food bills are exacerbating feelings of isolation, discrimination and loneliness among hundreds of thousands of people over 65 to such an extent it is affecting their health. The third annual Spotlight survey by the charity paints a disturbing picture of the elderly, with 15 per cent of the 2.8 million pensioners claiming to be in "persistent poverty". In the past year an estimated 200,000 extra pensioner households have been plunged into fuel poverty.
