While having a holiday massage I experienced unexpected pins and needles and discomfort ( similar to a pulled muscle) each time my calves were touched. Even lightly. 'Perhaps a little less pressure . . ?' I suggested, through gritted teeth. The masseur studied the backs of my naked legs with a look of concern. 'You may have lymphoedema,' he said, advising me to see a doctor. Water retention is the condition's more benign name - one that has been used as a catch-all to describe anything from PMS bloating to excess flab around the knees.
