Making a meal of our drink problem - The Sunday Telegraph 25th May 2008

About a year after I'd had my third child and was trying to lose weight, a friend of mine came up with a novel idea (well, novel to me). "Why don't you stop drinking?" she said. She then went on to tell me that wine has billions of calories per glass and that cider - which I love - has even more and that basically if I stopped imbibing, I'd stand more of a chance of getting back into my pre-baby clothes. I was aghast. It had never really occurred to me that drinking might be contributing to my weight problem. All I've ever known about alcohol is that, if you drink too much of it, you get drunk. Sometimes it's quite nice to get a bit drunk. Other times it is not.
