Doctors have been told to talk to their patients and take their views into account when deciding on treatments. Consultation should mean more than ticking boxes, new guidance from the General Medical Council says. It seeks to banish paternalism from the surgery. Doctors should “actively engage patients in discussions, allowing them to make decisions based on their individual needs and circumstances”, it says. That could include the decision not to have any treatment at all, it adds.
