People who buy specialist vacuum cleaners and mattress covers to fight the dust mites that can cause asthma are wasting their money, a review by an influential group of scientists says today. The Cochrane Collaboration's review concludes that none of the interventions touted for dust mite eradication works, including washing bedding at temperatures higher than 60C and using specialist cleaning products. The best products get rid of only 50% of dust mites, which live in soft toys, furniture, carpets, bedding and curtains and can trigger asthma attacks in people who are allergic to them. Unfortunately, 90% eradication is not enough to prevent those who are sensitive to dust mites from asthma attacks.
