Hospitals are not the best places to be, if you can help it, and the thrust of health policy is increasingly to keep people out of them as far as possible by providing care and support in the community. This applies particularly to people living with long-term conditions, such as diabetes or heart disease, who at any one time occupy six out of every 10 hospital beds. If such people could be helped better to manage their conditions, and remain at home and at work, their lives would be enhanced and the NHS would save money.
