Millions of people over 40 are to be checked for the early signs of heart disease, strokes and diabetes in a mass screening programme that will start across England next year, the government announced yesterday. Alan Johnson, the health secretary, said the scheme would save thousands of lives by detecting conditions in time for doctors and patients to take preventive action.
