Mary Bousted had some sensible things to say yesterday about excessive testing in schools and the need to let teachers decide on how they impart knowledge. Successive governments have borne down far too heavily on the classroom. According to Dr Bousted, the general secretary of the Association of Teachers and Lecturers, addressing that body's annual conference in Torquay, this has led to a rise in mental-health problems among over-tested children and ensnared those who teach in an inordinate amount of form-filling.
