Shopkeepers could be banned from displaying cigarettes under plans being considered by the Government, according to reports. In a bid to cut the number of smokers and prevent children from taking up the habit, ministers have drawn up proposals including a bar on displaying tobacco products and the removal of vending machines from pubs, The Times said. Measures that make it easier to sell nicotine replacement gums and patches are also on the table.

Despite the uproar, the cigarette display ban deadline remains May 31st 2008. Many ontario store owners are not ready for this change. I am a smoker myself, and having cigarettes covered up will not stop me from buying them, but I see how it could prevent people from starting. Personally, if anything, convenience store owners could benefit a great deal from this. Their counter display will be less cluttered with all the cigarettes neatly packed away. While the deadline approaches, and still so many store owners unprepared, storage fixture companies are helping by having tobacco storage solutions that are fast and easy to install and comply with government regulation.
