Scientists have discovered a new genetic marker for breast cancer which could help doctors diagnose the disease and help further research. They have found that women who have a specific stretch of genetic code have a 40% greater chance of developing the disease, raising the lifetime risk of breast cancer from 11% to more than 15%. Between five and 15% of all breast cancers are due to genetic factors and can be inherited. Of these, around 40% are directly attributed to well-known mutations such as those in genes known as BRCA1 and BRCA2, which are routinely screened for.
