Seventy million women have been screened for breast and cervical cancer in the 20 years since the programmes were launched, figures show today. More than 100,000 breast cancers and what are described as 400,000 "significant cervical abnormalities" have been detected since work began in 1988. Figures show that 18m sets of mammograms have been taken, with more than 100 breast cancers found every week.
