The Old World is notorious for introducing smallpox to the new, wiping out up to 90 per cent of the inhabitants. Now there is new evidence backing the idea that the exchange of diseases went both ways, with Columbus and his men taking syphilis from the New World into renaissance Europe, after contracting the sexually transmitted disease during their voyage of discovery.
