Women who suffer from pre-eclampsia during pregnancy are more likely to develop heart disease later in life, according to two studies published online by the British Medical Journal. They suggest that the conditions may share common causes or mechanisms. In an accompanying editorial, experts suggest that women who have suffered the alarm and discomfort of pre-eclampsia, a life-threatening condition for mother and baby which involves high blood pressure, may be more willing than most to change their diet and lifestyle to ward off heart disease. The condition causes more than 12% of women's deaths in pregnancy and childbirth worldwide.
