Readers pledge £185,000 in aid - The Observer 4th November 2007

Last month the Observer and the Guardian launched a three-year appeal to support the people who lived in and around a small village in north-east Uganda. The Katine appeal began with a series of stories portraying the lives of the individuals who lived in the area and suffer from poverty, poor health, inadequate education and occasional conflict. There was Loyce Achao, the pharmacist, with her grandson Ezra; Esau Edonu, the farmer; and Josephine Achen, the birth attendant. Then there were the schoolchildren who ate just once a day; and their mothers, who pushed away tiny worms as they filled their water cans.
