Outmoded practices and breaches of guidelines continue in many maternity units around the country, the biggest survey of childbirth experiences reveals today. The study shows that more than half of women delivered on their backs while more than a quarter said they gave birth with their legs in stirrups. Recently published guidelines from the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence enshrined what has long been considered best practice - that women should be discouraged from lying down to give birth and helped to squat, stand and move about.
