Plans to freeze GPs' pay until March 2009 and restrict nurses to a further year of below-inflation salary increases were disclosed by the government yesterday, causing alarm among the health unions. After official figures last week showing the average GP earned more than £110,000 in 2005-06, the four health ministers for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland decided enough was enough.
