As son begins life sentence, mother tells of desperate effort to have him sectioned The cries for help grew ever louder. To begin with, Adam Thomas sought attention by provoking fights and getting involved in drunken pranks. Then, convinced he was "wired wrong", a danger to society, he made a botched attempt to kill himself and, when the help still did not come, smashed his car into the front of a bank. Thomas's mother, Karen, a nurse, begged the authorities to section the 24-year-old, warning them that disaster was around the corner.
