Considerable publicity, including advertising on the London Underground, is being given to a newly developed vaccine against human papilloma virus for the prevention of cervical cancer, which affects about 2,800 women each year in the UK and kills about 800. The vaccination programme will prevent cervical cancer in about 75 per cent of those vaccinated and is recommended routinely for 12 to 13-year-old girls, hopefully before they are at risk of infection.
