A controversial cervical cancer vaccine due to be given to girls as young as 12 may offer protection for women up to the age of 45, the manufacturer has revealed. Merck, who developed the Gardasil vaccine studied 3,800 women aged 24 to 45. They found the vaccine prevented 91 per cent of cases of persistent infection, minor cervical abnormalities, pre-cancers and genital warts caused by four strains of the sexually transmitted human papillomavirus, or HPV.
